Your CGPA is 2.49 and you think the door is shut. It is not. Malaysia writes its postgraduate entry floor down in a public standard, and there is a named route for people who sit just under it. Families ask me about this in the first ten minutes of almost every call.
What follows is the postgraduate route as it runs for a graduate holding a bachelor's from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Egypt or the Gulf. A masters degree in Malaysia is a one-to-two year decision with a fee range wide enough that two students in the same lecture hall pay RM 20,000 and RM 80,000. That gap is mode and campus, not prestige.
What CGPA does a masters degree in Malaysia actually require?
MQA publishes the floor, and every accredited campus works inside it. A master's by coursework asks for a bachelor's in the field or a related field with a minimum CGPA of 2.50. Mixed mode and research master's ask for 2.75. Those two numbers decide most of what happens next, and they are national, not per-campus.
Under them sit the exceptions most families never hear about. A candidate between 2.50 and 2.75 can still be admitted to a mixed-mode or research master's subject to a rigorous internal assessment by the university. Below 2.50, the same standard allows admission with a minimum of five years of working experience in the relevant field. Taylor's applies exactly that pattern on its Master of Laws.
The number that matters is not your CGPA
It is the distance between your CGPA and 2.50, and what you have done since. Two years out with a relevant job is a stronger file than a fresh 2.6 with none, because the assessment is written to reward exactly that.
Should you take a taught, mixed mode or research master's?
A taught (coursework) master's is modules, assignments and a small project, usually finished in twelve to eighteen months. Mixed mode splits your time between modules and a supervised dissertation. A research master's is a thesis with a supervisor and almost no classes. Your choice changes your fee, your entry bar and how your evenings look for two years.
Most international students should take the coursework route, and here is the reasoning. Coursework has a fixed timetable, end date and price, so your visa, your budget and your family's expectations all line up. A research master's depends on a supervisor, an ethics approval, data that may not arrive, and a viva that can slip a semester. MQF sets a minimum of 40 graduating credits for coursework and mixed mode, while a research master's carries no credit rating at all under the 2024 Malaysian Qualifications Framework. That is why it is harder to predict. Heading for a PhD? Research is the better spend. Otherwise take the taught route, and refuse a thesis you did not ask for.
What do masters degree Malaysia fees look like by university?

When are the intakes for a master degree in Malaysia?
Postgraduate intakes cluster in January, February, March, May, July and September, with INTI running six a year and MSU and MAHSA running five. That density is good news: a missed deadline costs you two or three months, not twelve. The practical cut-off is not the intake date. It is the day your file is complete enough for EMGS.
How does EMGS work for a postgraduate, and what is different?
Every international student pass in Malaysia is processed by EMGS, the agency owned by the Ministry of Higher Education. Your university submits the application with your documents and the fee. EMGS states a client charter of 14 working days for a complete application, and a compulsory health screening at an approved clinic within seven working days of arrival according to EMGS.
What changes at postgraduate level is the evidence, not the process. You submit a degree certificate and full transcript rather than a school certificate, and a research place may also need a proposal and a supervisor's acceptance.
English is the piece people underestimate. EMGS asks you to show English competency and upload the certificate with the visa application, warning that a missing certificate may delay processing in its published guidelines. Universities set their own score: Taylor's Master of Laws asks IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 60. A waiver is considered only when your bachelor's was taught and examined in English, in writing.
What will your first year cost once you add living expenses?
EMGS puts Malaysia's average cost of living at about USD 582 a month, roughly RM 2,500 on its cost-of-living page. For a single postgraduate sharing accommodation outside central Kuala Lumpur, a realistic annual living budget is RM 22,000 to RM 30,000 on top of tuition, before flights, the visa cycle and a room deposit.
Put the pieces together for a mid-range coursework master's: about RM 30,000 tuition over eighteen months, RM 25,000 a year to live, plus one-off costs at arrival. Who should not do a masters degree in Malaysia?
Three people should not. Anyone whose real goal is a work visa rather than a qualification; a student pass is tied to study and ends with it. Anyone entering a licensed profession abroad without first checking their home regulator's recognition list. And anyone who cannot fund the full programme today.
The recognition point is the one that hurts most. A programme accredited by MQA is a recognised Malaysian qualification, but recognition by your home regulator, licensing board or civil service is a separate decision made by that body. The honest disqualifier
If you are hoping the qualification itself will produce a job offer in Malaysia, reconsider. Employability figures belong to the university, not to you, and a student pass does not convert into a work pass. Come for the degree and the cost.
